Happy New Year! Revised edition coming soon…

Happy 2023, everyone. My book, NetSuite for Consultants was first published in January of 2022 and my fantastic publisher has encouraged me to write updates for it already. I am working on a Third Edition now for 2023. You can see it’s new cover design on Amazon.com already, in fact.

Don’t try to boil the ocean

“They’re trying to boil the ocean!”

Have you heard this phrase before? You might hear consultants say this when they think a client is trying to accomplish too much at once. I say it every so often when someone is trying to customize NetSuite in a way which is really more than the system can handle, or when we try to accomplish building a lot of customizations in a very short time. I get concerned for a number of reasons.

Handling Client Requirements

There’s a lot of talk right now about a video featuring Elon Musk and his five-rules for successful product engineering. In the video, he talks about the ways he has found to improve any new requirement for his SpaceX rockets, and how his team makes sure they only build things they really need to. You can watch that video to get all the details (and a few great behind the scenes stories as well), but his five rules can be summarized as follows:

The first review is in

The NetSuite book has its first official review, and it’s from Tim Dietrich. He’s a well-known and very well regarded NetSuite expert so I’m really happy he took the time to read my book and write up a review on his site.

The book is available now – Happy New Year 2022!

We’re live!     :)

I am so very happy to say that the book is available for purchase now. It took me most of 2021 to write but it was worth the effort. I shared the news of the book’s release with my LinkedIn freinds on the 6th and the response has been really great so far. There are no reviews out there yet, but I can’t wait to see what people think of the contents. This being my first book, and so the first thing I’ve written with more than a handful of pages, I’m nervous about the possibility of typos and poor sentence structure, as much as incorrect statements I might have made.

Down to the final editing

All 20 chapters are written and now the first 16 chapters have final PDFs. We’re down to just the last bits of editing and fine-tuning before the book’s production can begin. It’s exciting and also really nerve wracking. What if something I wrote was wrong? (Imposter syndrome is kicking in) What about typos or poor grammar? (My awesome Packt Publishing editors and reviewers have that one covered!) What if nobody reads books these days or maybe they just don’t need this book?

Twenty chapters written - SuiteWorld 2021

I’ve written all 20 chapters of the Implementing NetSuite book now and so we’re down to just editing, reviewing and finalizing everything! It’s really exciting to think that I’ve finished writing the majority of the book and it will be published soon. We’re reviewing it all now to make sure it’s as close to perfect as possible before it goes to the presses. Let me know if you have any questions about the book, now that it’s mostly written.

Halfway Done

Woohoo! Half of the book’s 20 chapters are being reviewed and finalized now with my publisher. The end date for all this is pushed out from where we started but I’m so excited to be able to see the finish line now and to know that the book should go to the presses before November. I still have many important chapters to write, and the early chapters are still in review, but the book seems really good so far. We have a ’technical reviewer’ with NetSuite experience looking over the chapters now and so far, they have liked what they see. (I don’t get to know who that is, but whoever you are - thank you so much for helping out!)

Two Chapters Reviewed

I’m excited to report that two chapters are mostly done now. I have a bunch more started but they still have to be reviewed by the publisher. We’re working really hard to make them as complete and accurate and easy to read as possible.
